Learn how BCBSIL puts access control of your health data into your hands. You have the choice of who you share your data with.

One of the first steps to keeping your health data safe is choosing who you share it with. Your health data is private. It's important to think about who you want to have it:

Who can use my health data?

Decide if you share your health data and who can use it. You or your personal representative must opt in before your data is shared with anyone but your providers.

Sharing claims, medical history and prior approval data with doctors can help them with your care. You're opted in to share your health data with your doctors.

Manage Your Data Sharing Choices With Your Doctor

You are automatically opted in to share your claims, medical history and prior approval data with your doctors. If you want to opt out of data sharing, you or your personal representative have 2 options:

  1. Log in to the BCBSIL App on your phone or tablet. Once you log in, you'll be prompted to update your data sharing settings. You can also make changes in Account Settings.

Opt In or Update Your Choice to Share Data With Other Insurers

You are not automatically opted in to share your health data with other insurers. There are 2 ways you can opt in or update your choice to opt back out:

  1. Log in to the BCBSIL App on your phone or tablet. Upon logging in, you'll be prompted to choose your preferences. You can also update them later in Account Settings.

Learn How to Manage Data Sharing With Third-Party Apps

You are automatically opted out to share your health data with third-party apps. Some third-party apps have settings to block or allow access to your data. Each app is different, but you can normally find security or privacy settings in the main menu.

BCBSIL also gives you or your personal representative the choice to approve or disapprove which third-party apps can access your data. Log in with your member online account details to get started.

What is interoperability and what does it have to do with my health data?

In health care, interoperability means making sure your information can be shared safely and easily between the different systems involved in your health care.

Part of interoperability includes making it easy for you to decide who can access your data. This helps make sure you get better, more effective care from doctors, especially if you switch insurance plans or providers.

Should I opt in to share my health data?

It's your choice, but there are some benefits to sharing your health data with trusted doctors, insurers and third-party apps. If BCBSIL shares your health data, it could:

  • Help your doctors or new insurers better manage your care
  • Speed up the prior authorization process
  • Make it easier for you to switch insurers or doctors
  • Keep you in control of your care

In the end, the choice to opt in (or out) of sharing your health data is a personal one. Only you can make it, and BCBSIL is here to help no matter what you decide.

What health data will be shared?

When you opt in to data sharing, BCBSIL might share the following information:
